Stitching the bottom in

Sat 22 June 2013 by Cory Cross

Complex curves are hard.

As the bow curves upward, the bottom pieces slope upward (downward in these pictures since it is upside-down) in a complex 3-dimensional curve. I started trimming the front to match the curve, and I couldn't get them to bend or line up worth a damn, so I panicked and cut them off.

After some cooling down, I realized I actually needed some heating up! So I ran those panels under hot water for ten seconds (the plywood is supposed to be moisture resistant, but this is still not a good idea), and it was flexible enough to make the curve!

They overlapped a bit, so I trimmed the panels and you can see they line up on the outside decently -- too bad I put those giant gaps in the center :(. I left it clamped like this until I stitched it all tight.

So I shaped a couple scrap pieces to fit in the gaps. Not as strong as solid pieces across, but better than nothing!

Now it's ready for filleting the inside edges with thickened epoxy!
