First Bow's Rear Bulkhead

Thu 20 June 2013 by Cory Cross

So I glued up the reinforcing pieces of 3/4" (so-called 1") thick, 1.7" inch wide pieces of pine to the inside of the rear bulkhead. There'll be 1/2" holes through this where I'll bolt 1/2" SS bolts through to lock the hulls together.

The day before I cut the pine pieces to size, put the glue on (Titebond II), and clamped them to the plywood. Now, problem is, I wasn't careful when I clamped this together and converted three nice straight pieces into one minorly-warped board (it "potato-chipped"). Oops. It's only about a centimeter or two off. It straightened a bit when I clamped it to the sides. When I'm fiberglassing this hull, I'll either use some thickened epoxy to flatten out this face, or not and just use a thicker sheet of rubber between the hull sections than originally planned.

Next time I'll clamp everything to the flat workbench.
